ANIMAL CHARITIES
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) founded in 1980 is the largest animal rights organisation in the world. It focuses on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer most intensely for the longest periods of time, factory farms, clothing trade, laboratories and the entertainment industry. They concentrate on education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement and protest campaigns.
Animal Aid founded in 1977 is the UK’s largest Animal Rights Group. They campaign peacefully against all forms of animal abuse, promote cruelty free living, and concentrate on education and research. They expose animal cruelty and evidence is often used by the media for the public. They have an online shop for vegans.
CIWF (Compassion in World Farming) is an animal welfare group, founded in 1967 by Peter Roberts, a British farmer who was horrified by the development of modern intensive farming. It is campaigning to seek global reform for billions of suffering farm animals, exposes the truth about the food we eat and is fighting to end cruel factory farming.
Viva! (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals) founded in 1994 campaigns for farm animal welfare and encourages a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. They have their own Viva! Symbol for approved products and stores.
OneKind is the voice for animals in Scotland. They investigate and uncover animal cruelty, lobby politicians and businesses to change laws and protect animals and campaign that the plight of Scotland’s animals can never be ignored.
SSPCA or SPCA (Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) founded in 1839 rescues animals in danger, finds pets new homes, investigates abuse and prevents cruelty through free education programmes for Scottish schools.
RSPCA (charity for England and Wales) established in 1824 is the oldest and largest animal charity in the world. It does outreach work across Europe, Africa and Asia. It has an international, national, regional and branch organisation to prevent cruelty, promote kindness, and alleviate suffering of animals.
HSI (Humane Society International) is one of the only global organisations working to help all animals, including animals in laboratories, on farms, companion animals and wildlife.
LACS (League Against Cruel Sports) founded in 1924, campaign for change by lobbying government, politicians and businesses (includes bull fighting, dog fighting, hunting, greyhound racing, shooting and snaring and trophy hunting, grand national race etc).
RGT (The Retired Greyhound Trust) cares for greyhounds all over UK.
BFF (The Born Free Foundation) founded in 1984 is an international wild-life charity. They rescue vulnerable animals, stop suffering and protect endangered species.
Greenpeace focus on environmentalism and peace rather than specifically on animal rights, but did campaign to stop whaling and the destruction of the orang-utan habitat through the use of pine oil etc.
ANTI-VIVISECTION ORGANISATIONS
ADI (Animal Defenders International) are a global organisation who campaign to replace animal experiments.
BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) campaign against animal testing, do undercover investigations and political lobbying.
DHT (The Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research) is the UK’s leading medical research charity that funds and promotes exclusively non-animal techniques to replace animal experiments.
NAVS (The National Anti-Vivisection Society) is one of the oldest anti-vivisection organisations in the world and campaign against animal experiments.
Uncaged Campaigns founded in 1993 is a national anti-vivisection organisation. It is against xenotransplantation ( animal to human transplants) and exposes cruelty in laboratories.
VEGETARIAN & VEGAN ORGANISATIONS

The Vegan Society promote a way of living which avoids the use of animal products. They give advice on going vegan and have an animal free shopping guide.
